90’s Looks We Love

Ah, the '90s. The decade of Britney Spears, Kurt Cobain, young Leo and some very… unique developments in fashion. While we love to reflect on every decade passed, the 1990's holds a special place in our hearts because, well, it's the first one we actually experienced first hand and in full.

One of the best things about the 90's was the complexity of the era. Much like the combatting trends of the 1970's, the 90's brought us a symphony of styles. From grunge to goth to bubblegum, we were gifted with a jumble of recycled trends and brand new ones. And while some of the new trends involved not bathing or (gulp) pencil thin brows, we're still convinced the good totally outweighed the bad.

We've put together a list of some of our fav makeup trends from the '90s. The "whatever" era is having a moment right now, and we are here for it.

So, in the words of Cher Horowitz, "let's do a makeover!"

Frosted…Everything

No, we are not condoning frosted tips. Frosted makeup, however, is another story. There was something about head-to-toe shine that got us fired up in the decade of boy bands and princess pop. Blame it on the impending Y2K and the obsession with anything shiny and galactic that seemed to take hold around 1996, but the icier the better when it came to makeup. Luckily, the frosted look is an easy one to emulate. Basically created for this, our waterproof gel eyeliner pencil collection will give those lids dreamy, shimmery results. From lash line to brow bone, coat your eyes with Sparkling Rosé (line your bottom lashes, too!), and top the lid off with Champagne Gold. Totally out of this world!

Smokey Spice

A charcoal eye is nothing new, but the smokey eye made a true name for itself in the '90s. Versatile and workable across many fads- from goth to grunge to the 1998 VMA's red carpet - the smokey eye was everything. We're still fans of it today, and while the look has been modified thousands of times over, there's nothing quite like the classic.

To build a 90's smokey eye that Christina Aguilera herself would praise, start by covering your lid, to the crease, with our Meloliner in Milk Chocolate, blending upward. Lighten up your inner lid with Champagne Gold and trace your upper and lower lash lines with Super Black. Don't be shy about blending and smudging. Finish the look with a cat eye swipe of our liquid eyeliner + remover and a heavy dose of our lash primer and mascara in Super Black.

Walking Into Spiderwebs

A look we're sure Gwen Stefani rocked herself in the '90s, the "spider lash" was a simple but bold fad that we're seeing a resurgence of in 2022. A little pop punk and, well, a little controversial, the idea behind spider lashes was simple: apply a lot of black mascara on your upper and lower lids, pushing the lashes together into sections to create a separated long lash look. A look super easy to create with our super black mascara, and one that finds that perfect 1990's balance of pop and rock. We promise, when done tastefully, the effects are pretty impressive!

There are a plethora of trends born in the 1990's that we love, so these few favorites are just a starting point. And we don't know about you, but we're suddenly feeling inspired to toss on CrazySexyCool and deep dive into the timeless question: could Jack and Rose both fit on that door? (Yes, they could!)
